El Monte, city in Los Angeles County, southwestern California. The city is located in the San Gabriel Valley, in the Los Angeles metropolitan region. Manufactures include plastic, glass, and electronic equipment. It is the site of the El Monte Historical Society Museum.
The name El Monte, given by Spanish explorers, is derived from the word meaning “woodland.” The city is the oldest settlement in the San Gabriel Valley; it was founded in the early 1850s around the western terminus of the Santa Fe Trail. The first public school and Protestant church in Southern California were built in the city. El Monte incorporated in 1912.
