El Cerrito, residential city, Contra Costa County, western California, on San Francisco Bay; incorporated 1917. The city, located on the site of the San Pablo Rancho (granted by Mexico in 1823), was founded in 1877. El Cerrito is Spanish for “little hill.” Population 22,731 (1980); 22,869 (1990); 23,171 (2000 estimate).
