Daly City, city in San Mateo County, western California, on the Pacific Ocean, near San Francisco; settled in the 1850s, incorporated 1911. It is a residential community and medical and retail center. Daly City's growth began with the arrival of refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, who made new homes here. The city is named for John Daly, a dairy farmer on whose land much of the city was built. The 1956 and 1964 Republican National Conventions and many other events have been held at the Cow Palace, the large hall located here.
