Claremont, city in Los Angeles County, southwestern California, in the Pomona Valley, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains; incorporated 1907. Manufactures include scientific instruments and semiconductors. The city is the site of the Claremont Colleges, which include Pomona College (1887), Claremont Graduate School (1925), Scripps College (1926), Claremont McKenna College (1946), Harvey Mudd College (1955), and Pitzer College (1963). The School of Theology at Claremont (1957) and a botanical garden are also here. Founded in 1887 by a land development company, the community probably is named for Claremont, New Hampshire. Until 1974 it was an important fruit processing center. Population 30,950 (1980); 32,503 (1990); 33,998 (2000).
