Carson, city, Los Angeles County, southwestern California, an industrial and residential center near Los Angeles; incorporated 1968. Refined petroleum, fabricated metals, paper products, chemicals, electronics, automobiles, and aerospace equipment are manufactured in the city. California State University, Dominguez Hills, and the Dominguez Ranch Adobe, built in the 1800s and now a historical museum, are here. A land grant for the Carson area was issued to Juan José Dominguez in 1784, and the community is named for the developer John Manuel Carson, a descendant of the Dominguez family. Oil was discovered here in 1923. In the last decades of the 20th century the city closed down many heavy-industry facilities and constructed environmentally-sound industrial parks.
