Burbank, city, Los Angeles County, southwestern California, a northern suburb of Los Angeles, in the San Fernando Valley; incorporated 1911. Burbank is noted for its prominent movie and television industries. Manufactures include aircraft parts, plastics, and cosmetics. Tourism is important to the city's economy. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport, Woodbury University, and a campus of the University of La Verne are here. The community was platted in 1887 on land that had been part of a sheep ranch belonging to Dr. David Burbank, after whom it is named. Population 84,625 (1980); 93,643 (1990); 97,430 (1998 estimate).
