Phoenix's population grew from 789,704 in 1980 to 983,403 in 1990; the population was 1,198,064 in 1998. According to the 1990 census, whites constitute 81.7 percent of the city's population; blacks, 5.2 percent; Native Americans, 1.9 percent; and Asians and Pacific Islanders 1.6 percent. The remainder are of mixed heritage or did not report ethnicity. Hispanics, who may be of any race, make up 19.7 percent of the population.
Almost two-thirds of Arizona's population lives in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The regional population increased from 1,600,000 in 1980 to 2,238,000 in 1990; it reached an estimated 2,564,000 in 1995.
