Saltillo, city, northern Mexico, capital of Coahuila State, on a plateau of the Sierra Madre Occidental, near Monterrey. The chief industries are the manufacture of cotton and woolen fabrics, ceramics, and flour. The Autonomous University of Coahuila (1957) is here. The Battle of Buena Vista, between Mexican and U.S. forces, was fought near the city in 1847 during the Mexican War. Population (1995) 527,979.
