Cholula, in full, Cholula de Rivadabia, town in central Mexico, in Puebla State, on the plateau of Anáhuac, about 2135 m (about 7000 ft) above sea level, near Mexico City. The town is a rail junction. Industries include food processing and textile manufacturing. At the time of the Spanish conquest, Cholula was the Aztec sacred city devoted to worship of the legendary ruler Quetzalcoatl. The Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés visited it in 1519 and, suspecting a plot against the Spaniards, destroyed most of the city. The town is famous for an ancient pre-Columbian pyramid and for the many churches with domes occupying sites on which native temples once stood.
