Verdun, city in Île de Montréal County, southern Québec, Canada. It is located mainly on the Île de Montréal (Montréal Island), on the St. Lawrence River. The city, which also includes the Île des Soeurs (Nuns' Island), is a suburb of Montréal. A community college is located here. The city is also home to numerous parks and landscaped areas along the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Among the city's annual events are the Worldwide Kite Rendez-vous and the Montréal Highland Games, both held in summer.
Europeans founded the community in 1671 and took the name Verdun in honor of the founder's birthplace, Saverdun, France. Verdun incorporated in 1875. During the early 1900s it grew as industries developed in nearby Montréal and along the Lachine Canal. Île des Soeurs became part of Verdun in 1956.
