Pointe-Claire, city, Île-de-Montréal County, southern Québec Province; incorporated as a city 1958. The city is located on the southern shore of Montréal Island, overlooking a wide portion of the St. Lawrence River known as Lake St.-Louis. It is a residential and industrial suburb of Montréal, with manufactures that include motor-vehicle parts, chemicals, electrical equipment, and metal and plastic products. The community was founded in the early 18th century. Pointe-Claire remained essentially an agricultural town until experiencing rapid growth in the 1950s. Population 26,026 (1986); 28,435 (1996).
