Pierrefonds, city on the Île de Montréal (Montréal Island), southern Québec, Canada. Located on the Rivière des Prairies, Pierrefonds is part of the Montréal Urban Community and is primarily a residential suburb of Montréal. It is home to a cultural center and sports and recreation facilities. The community was established as part of Sainte-Geneviève Parish; Pierrefonds was created in 1958 when Sainte-Geneviève split into five municipalities. Pierrefonds acquired its name from a local residence that was built in 1902 and named after a castle in Pierrefonds, France. The city grew rapidly in the early 1960s and again in the 1980s.
Pierrefonds covers a land area of 24.4 sq km (9.4 sq mi). Population 48,735 (1991); 52,986 (1996).
