Lévis, city in Desjardins regional county municipality in southern Québec, Canada. Lévis is situated on the southeast shore of the St. Lawrence River, directly across from Québec City. With its abundance of commercial, economic, administrative, and governmental services, Lévis is the main urban center for Desjardins. It is also an important center for the administrative region of Chaudière-Appalaches in terms of commercial, economic, and administrative activities. The head office of the cooperative bank Caisses Populaires-Desjardins is a major employer in Lévis. While the overwhelming majority of the working population of Lévis is employed in the commercial and services sectors, industry is also important to the local economy. Shipbuilding, ship repair, and manufactured goods such as plastic products are particularly significant. Lévis is connected to Québec City by ferry and is served by Jean Lesage International Airport in nearby Sainte-Foy.
Lévis offers a panoramic view of Québec City and the surrounding region from its steep cliff. Points of interest in the city include two fortifications, the Fort de la Martinière and the Fort-Numéro-Un. An interpretive center at the restored house of Alphonse Desjardins, a leader of the credit union movement in the early 1900s, provides information on his life and work.
