Alma, city in Lac-Saint-Jean-Est County, southern Québec, Canada. It spreads across Alma Island and along both banks of the Saguenay River, near Lac St.-Jean. A large hydroelectric facility was built in Alma during the mid-1920s. Economic activities include granite mining and the production of aluminum and paper. The community, founded in 1867, was known as Saint-Joseph-d'Alma until 1954. Several nearby towns were annexed in 1962. Alma was originally incorporated in 1958. A new city of Alma was incorporated in 1979, when the old city joined with a neighboring community.
