York, former city in southern Ontario, Canada, on the Humber River, formerly part of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto. It is a primarily residential community and has some manufacturing industries. Incorporated as a borough in 1967 with the consolidation of the township of York and the town of Weston, York became a city in 1983. In 1998 it was combined with five other municipalities to form a new City of Toronto. Population 135,401 (1986); 146,534 (1996).
