Welland, city in the Niagara Regional Municipality in southern Ontario, Canada. It is a port located on the Welland River and the Welland Ship Canal, south of St. Catharines. Welland is a manufacturing center and a distribution point for the surrounding agricultural region. Major manufactures include iron and steel, large-diameter pipes, rubber goods, agricultural implements, and electrical equipment. The telecommunications and service sectors, including financial services, were growing at the end of the 20th century.
Welland is home to a campus of the Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology, which is the site of the Motive Power Training Center, an auto-training center. Points of interest include the Welland Historical Museum, the Welland Ship Canal locks, and the Welland Recreational Waterway. The city is also known for murals painted by Canadian artists that adorn downtown buildings. Nearby is Merritt Island, a recreational island maintained by the city. Annual events include the Rose Festival, held in June, and the Niagara Regional Exhibition, held in September.
