Timmins, city in Cochrane District, eastern Ontario, Canada, on the Mattagami River. It is a commercial, service, and manufacturing center. Timmins is situated in a lumber and mining (gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper, cadmium, and iron ore) region. Major products include refined metals, paper, and wood items. The service and tourism industries increased in importance by the end of the 20th century.
Several educational institutions are located in the city, including the Collège Universitaire de Hearst. Attractions include the Timmins Museum and the National Exhibition Centre. The city is also home to several tours that highlight the city's principal industries, such as the Kidd Creek Metallurgical Division Tour, the Porcupine Demonstration Forest Tour, and the Underground Gold Mine Tour. The Underground Gold Mine expanded in the late 1990s. The city has a variety of trail systems, including snowmobile trails.
