Scarborough, former city, southern Ontario, on Lake Ontario; incorporated 1983. With the cities of Etobicoke, North York, Toronto, and York and the borough of East York, it made up the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto, which was created in 1953. Scarborough is an industrial and residential community. Scarborough College (1964), a branch of the University of Toronto; Centennial College (1867); and Saint Augustine's Seminary are here. The Scarborough Bluffs, the Toronto Zoo, and Rouge Valley Park are also located in this area. Surveyed in 1791 as Glasgow township, it was renamed in 1793 for Scarborough, England. It grew rapidly after World War II and was designated as a borough in 1967. In 1998 Scarborough and the other metropolitan communities were combined to form a new City of Toronto.
