Pickering, city, Durham Regional Municipality, southeastern Ontario, Canada. Pickering is situated on Lake Ontario and is a residential suburb of Toronto. Manufactures include machinery, motor vehicle parts, wood and metal products, plastics, electrical equipment, and pharmaceuticals. The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station is also significant to the town's economy. Points of interest include Pickering Museum Village, which contains buildings from the 1830s to the turn of the 20th century; Pickering Recreation Complex; two conservation areas; and a wildlife sanctuary.
Pickering was laid out from 1791 to 1792 and is named for Pickering, England. The town developed significantly in the period following World War II (1939-1945). It incorporated as a town in 1974 and became a city in 2000.
