Ottawa Restaurants - Pictures

Cafe Colonnade
280 Metcalfe St. - 613.237.3179 $5.01 - $15
The Cafe Colonnade serves pizza and a variety of Italian and American dishes. There is a second restaurant in the old city of Kanata. The small pizzas (enough for one adult) cost $10.00. The restaurant has many tables, probably holding at least 200 diners, however the building is divided into several rooms so it doesn't get too loud.
Cuisine: Italian
Recommended Dishes: combination pizza, Colonnade special pizza
Review: Excellent Pizza
This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Ottawa. I admit I haven't tried anything other than the pizza, but why should I, since they probably make the best pizza in Ottawa -- thick, tasty, great crust, great sauce, lots of toppings. The decor is functional at best but the large crowds betray the fact that the food is excellent.
Review: The Best in Town
The Cafe Colonnade is undoubtedly an institution in Ottawa. The owners Mona and Kalil have made this great restaurant what it is today. No one in the city has been able to duplicate the Colonnnade-- although they have certainly tried. The cheese, the sauce, the dough-- it's all good and delicious.
African Palace
376 Rideau - 613.789.7397 $5.01 - $15
Cuisine: African
Recommended Dishes: Tibs
Review: Beautiful Restaurant
My family and I had a wonderful time at this first class restaurant. Price, hospitality, quality and overall relaxing atmosphere is what it was all about for us. Please do yourself a favor and visit.
Biagio's Italian Kitchen
1394 Richmond Rd - 613.828.0770 $15.01 - $30
Biagio's is a traditional Italian restaurant serving pasta and pizza.
Cuisine: Italian
Review: Fabulous Restaurant
Went here for the first time recently and was blown away by how good it was, all around. I had the Odessa (a pasta dish with chicken, mushrooms and red peppers, in a creamy sauce) and the Raspberry White Chocolate Cheesecake, both of which were excellent. The prices here are very reasonable, expect to spend $10-$12 for an average entree. The service here is also great, they seem to have several waiters and waitresses checking on the table. The decor is very nice, contemporary and soothing. I will definitely be returning there many times.
Biftheque
2750 Iris St - 613.820.4220
Recommended Dishes: Prime Rib
Review: One of the Best Steak Houses
Great food, especially the various cuts of beef. The meals are large, and usually come with deep fried (?) croutons and dinner rolls to start, a nice salad, and your choice of potato along side whichever cut of meat you choose. For those who don't like steak, there are a number of other dishes that are sure to please.
Hy's Steak House
170 Queen St. - 613.234.4545 $15.01 - $30
Elegant yet comfortable restaurant has an extensive lunch and dinner menu. Specialty of the house is charcoal-broiled steaks. There is a large wine list.
Cuisine: Steaks
Recommended Dishes: Steak, caesar salad and rack of lamb steaks, ceasar salad, thermidor Steak
Review: The menu offers a reasonable selection, but you'll be missing out if you don't try one of their steaks. They're charcoal broiled in a small glass enclosure so you can watch as they cook. They are tender and cooked exactly as asked. Another special treat is the caesar salad, which is prepared tableside. The lettuce was fresh and the dressing was excellent.
Review: Excellent!
This is a truly beautiful and classy restaurant in every sense.
Review: Fine dining
Hy's is a very high-quality steak house in downtown Ottawa. It's excellent, but it's not the place to go if you're in a rush, or on a budget. I had the filet mignon, which was perfect, and some fairly expensive wine. The bill for three of us including tip came to $175. The average entree is probably about $20-$25. The service is excellent and this place is definitely "fine dining".
Amber Garden Restaurant
1 Richmond Road - 613.725.2757 $15.01 - $30
Cuisine: Eastern European
Recommended Dishes: The Amber Plate - A little of everything.
Review: A Classy Touch
Cathay
1755 St. Laurent Blvd - 613.521.9168 $15.01 - $30
Chinese restaurant with four locations in the city. Has normal restaurant on first floor, and large buffet/party room on the second floor.
Cuisine: Chinese
Recommended Dishes: beef Szechuan, almond with mixed vegetable Ding
Review: Large Menu
One of the most popular Chinese restaurants in Ottawa, has fast delivery, excellent food, and a large menu.
Dancing Mermaid
407 Laurier Ave W - 613.782.2449 $15.01 - $30
The Dancing Mermaid serves mainly seafood dishes, as well as pizza and pasta. The decor is colorful and there are some maritime-related accents. There are large windows and the place has as nice open atmosphere. Expect to spend about $20 for a nice lunch.
Cuisine: California
Recommended Dishes: Alamo pizza, penne with chicken and wild mushrooms
Review: Very Nice Seafood Restaurant
The Dancing Mermaid is an excellent choice for lunch. Most of the dishes are seafood, but there are several vegetarian and other choices available. I had the Mermaid chowder soup, which was tasty and quite filling, along with an Alamo pizza, which had pizza, Jack cheese and BBQ sauce as the toppings. The bill, including coffee, came to about $18, before tip. The service here is always good and the decor is inviting.
Meditheo
77 Clarence Street - 613.562.2500
Cuisine: Mediterranean
Review: Fabulous Dining
This upbeat eatery offers an exciting range of cuisine amidst decor which manages to blend the richness of cedar shelving and industrial, neon-blue ceiling illumination into a warm, cosy and quite happening place! We moistened our palates with a nice selection from eight different brews on tap.
Woody's
330 Elgin St. - 613.567.1088 $5.01 - $15
Pub and restaurant with a casual atmosphere. Monday to Friday, 5:00 - 7:00 happy hour has two-for-one muchies. Live local bands play every Sunday evening. Two large screen TVs play sports, and there are couchs in front of one of the two fireplaces. In the summer the windows facing active Elgin Street are removed. Following the pub theme many imported beers are available.
Cuisine: Irish
Recommended Dishes: Guinness stew, wings, stir fry
Bay Street Bistro
160 Bay St. - 613.234.1111 $15.01 - $30
Cuisine: Italian
Recommended Dishes: pizza
Review: Decent Bistro
I had the lunch buffet, which was inexpensive ($7.99, not including a drink). There were several different types of pasta, which were not terribly exciting, as well as pizza slices. Rolls and some salads were also available, but there was not a very large selection available. I would not recommend the lunch buffet, but rather the pizza, which I have had before and have enjoyed, or one of the sandwiches. There is a nice casual atmosphere and the service is very good.
Brixton's
210 Sparks - 613.233.8283
Brixton's is a smallish British pub. In the summer there is a patio on Sparks street. There is a fairly large bar and a few TVs for watching sports. The menu is fairly limited but there is still a decent selection of pub food.
Cuisine: British
Recommended Dishes: steak sandwich
Review: Decent pub
This is an average-to-good British pub located on the Sparks Street Mall. I had the Philly Steak Sandwich and salad, which was good. The service is fine. The decor is a little run-down but it doesn't detract too much from the dining experience.
Southern Cross Restaurant
404 Queen St - 613.230.0400 $15.01 - $30
This is a fairly typical Mexican restaurant serving the usual quesedillas, chimichangas, fajitas, burritos, etc. There is a large menu from which to choose. Decor follows the Mexican theme and is nice. Price is about average here.
Cuisine: Mexican
Recommended Dishes: Fajitas
Review: Decent Mexican Restaurant
Buffalo Charlie's Bar and Grill
33 Clarence - 613.241.4811 $15.01 - $30
CLOSED for business.
Cuisine: Tex-Mex
Recommended Dishes: Wings
Review: A decent version of the Tex-Mex and burgers style of restaurant, this well-located Buffalo Charlie's, is quite popular and is usually busy. Service, although friendly, is on the slow side, so don't come here if you are in hurry. Also I don't recommend trying many of the exotic meals on the menu; steer clear of the caeser salad, they use their own special dressing, so it does not taste as you would expect. <P>The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice: the Byward Market location has Christmas lights on the ceiling giving off a colorful glow; whereas the Billings Bridge location has painted walls that tell the story of Buffalo Charlie's many adventures. And they give you crayons to write on the table cloth with. So while it may take awhile to get your food you at least have a lot of things to look at and do
Review: Wow
The last time I was at Buffalo Charlie's the ceiling was leaking all over the food and they didn't seem to give a care that it was. The food was only so-so and the service was well below average. They gave me a bowl of what they wanted to call potato chips but was more like grease soaked potatoes.
Blue Cactus Bar and Grill
2 ByWard Market - 613.241.7061
Cuisine: Southwestern
Review: OK Tex/Mex Food
This is a largish two-storey restaurant at the end of the Byward Market. There's a Mexican/Southern theme going and the place as a nice atmosphere. I've only been once, but I wasn't overly impressed with the food. I had the 'Voodoo Chicken' which was reasonably-spicy chicken pieces cooked with lemon, which came with salad and fries. I found this place a little expensive and the food was only average.
The Cock 'n Bull
3791 Richmond - 613.596.1611 $15.01 - $30
This is a largish road house / pub type place. They have live bands fairly regularly. There are pool tables and a foosball table. Sandwiches, pizza, wings and typical pub fare are served.
Cuisine: Bar / Pub / Brewery
Recommended Dishes: unknown
Review: Mediocre
I've been here a couple of times and the food is decidely mediocre. Last time I had lasagna, which was very bland and soupy. A friend had the chicken wings, which smelled like burnt cinnamon, believe it or not. I'm not sure what to recommend here, other than the beer. If you go to hang out and watch the game or shoot some pool it's not a bad choice, but if you want a good meal there are better options.
Zak's Diner
16 Sq Byward Market - 613.241.2401
Cuisine: Diner
Recommended Dishes: mushroom, cheese, tomato omelette
Review: Adequate Food (though overpriced) Fun Atmosphere
Prices are a bit steep, and food is ok.
KFC
932 St. Laurent Blvd. - 613.745.4466
Cuisine: Fast Food
Review: Peeved Customer
Tim Hortons Donuts
1611 Bank - 613.260.1440
Cuisine: Doughnuts
Review: They Are Now Terrible
