North Bay, city, seat of Nipissing District, in southeastern Ontario, Canada, on Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake. Known as a “Gateway to the North,” North Bay's established transportation and communication links have long given it a major role in trade and distribution. Major manufactures include forest products and equipment, mining equipment, plastics, and resins. The city's wild-fur auction is one of the largest in the world. Tourism has long been a mainstay of the city's economy. The Region Sector Air Operations Centre for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is located at nearby Canadian Forces Base North Bay. Recently, the high-tech and telecommunications industries have grown in significance. The city is served by Jack Garland Airport.
Nipissing University and Canadore College are located in the city. Points of interest include the North Bay Area Museum; the Dionne Quints Museum, located in the former home of the Dionne quintuplets; and the Heritage Railway Company's Mini-Train, which takes passengers on a six-minute ride along the city's waterfront. North Bay's waterfront and the nearby Duchesnay Falls and Eau Claire Gorge offer abundant recreational opportunities and help make the city a popular summer destination. Annual events include the Winter Carnival, in February, and the North Bay Heritage Festival and Air Show, in August.
