Milton, town in southern Ontario, Canada. Milton is located 43 km (27 mi) west of central Toronto and is part of Halton Regional Municipality. Milton's economy was traditionally based on agriculture, but by the end of the 20th century it had become more industrialized. Industrialization was due largely to the town's location in the Greater Toronto Area and its accessibility to Québec and the northern United States. Milton has numerous transportation links, including several major highways and the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways, which serve the town's commercial and industrial needs. Manufactures include auto parts, steel recycling, and aerospace and telecommunications equipment. Tourism is also an important industry. Milton is served by Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport and by the Hamilton International Airport.
Milton offers many opportunities for recreation, particularly in the Niagara Escarpment. The Niagara Escarpment was designated an International Biosphere Reserve in 1990 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in order to protect and monitor the area's ecosystem. Its vast forestland and spectacular cliffs attract nature lovers, hikers, rock climbers, and skiers. Several of Milton's attractions offer access to, or views of, the escarpment, including Rattlesnake Point and Crawford Lake. Milton also features many historical sites, including the Ontario Agricultural Museum; the Ontario Renaissance Festival, which features a re-creation of a 16th-century Tudor village; and the Halton County Radial Railway, Canada's first operating electric railway museum.
