Guelph, city in southeastern Ontario, Canada, on the Speed River. An industrial and educational center, Guelph is the seat of Wellington County. Manufactures include electrical equipment, textiles, clothing, processed food, rubber goods, chemicals, iron and steel products, and tobacco products. Guelph is part of Canada's so-called technology triangle, an economic region comprising the cities of Guelph, Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo.
The University of Guelph includes the Ontario Agricultural College and the Ontario Veterinary College, and it is also the site of the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre. The agricultural college, an important center of agricultural research, maintains 200 hectares (500 acres) of experimental farms south of Guelph. Of historic interest in the city are the birthplace of the Canadian poet John McCrae and the Church of Our Lady, constructed from 1877 to 1888. The city is also home to the Art-in-Guelph gallery, which is associated with the city's Art-in-Guelph changing Web site. Additional attractions include the Guelph Civic Museum; Kortright Waterfowl Park; and Riverside Park, featuring a restored carousel and floral clock. Annual city events include the Guelph Spring Festival, the Guelph Jazz Festival, and the Eden Mills Writers Festival; the latter two events are held in September.
