Cambridge, city in Waterloo Regional Municipality, southern Ontario, Canada, along the Grand River. Cambridge is a manufacturing community with many diversified industries. It is part of Canada's so-called technology triangle, an economic region comprising the cities of Cambridge, Guelph, Kitchener, and Waterloo. Manufactures include automobiles, textiles, chemicals, wood products, and plastics. Tourism has grown in economic importance. Attractions in Cambridge include the African Lion Safari and Game Farm; Wings of Paradise, a butterfly and bug exhibit; and the Grand River Tour Boat cruise. Annual events include the Barefoot Waterskiing Championships in July and the Cambridge Fall Fair in September.
The city was formed in 1973 by merging the municipalities of Galt, Preston, and Hespeler with parts of the townships of Waterloo and North Dumfries. Several of these communities' former mills were turned into factory outlets. Downtown Cambridge underwent a revitalization in the 1990s that included a new transit terminal.
