Brampton, city, Peel Regional Municipality, southeastern Ontario, Canada, northwest of Toronto. Manufactures include aerospace equipment, chemicals, motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts, communications and electronic equipment, tobacco products, and processed foods. The high-tech industry has recently become important to the city's economy. Brampton is home to a branch campus of Sheridan College. It is also the site of Chinguacousy Park, which contains an animal farm, a petting zoo, and a teahouse; and of Peel Heritage Complex, which comprises the Region of Peel Museum, the Art Gallery of Peel, the Region of Peel Archives, and the Peel County Courthouse.
The community, settled in the 1830s, was originally called Buffy's Corners. It was renamed for Brampton, England, in 1853 and grew as a center of horticulture in the 1860s. Horticulture remained an important sector of the city's economy until the late 20th century. Brampton incorporated as a city in 1974.
