Truro, town in central Nova Scotia, Canada, seat of Colchester County, on the Salmon River, near the head of Cobequid Bay (an arm of the Bay of Fundy). It is a commercial and transportation center for the surrounding dairy-farming and lumbering region. Major manufactures include textiles, carpets, clothing, wood and plastic products, and printed materials. Colchester Historical Museum and Nova Scotia Teachers College (1855) are here. The community was settled at the end of the 17th century as Cobequid by Acadians; they were expelled in 1755. It received new settlers in the 1760s and was renamed, probably for Truro in Cornwall, England; it was incorporated in 1875. Population 12,124 (1986); 11,938 (1996).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Truro Information info
