New Glasgow, town in Pictou County, northern Nova Scotia, Canada. Located on the East River, near Pictou Harbour, it is a commercial and manufacturing center for the surrounding agricultural region. Products include metal items, construction materials, and mattresses. The community, established in 1809 after coal deposits were discovered in the area, was settled by Scots and named for Glasgow, Scotland. The settlement grew as a steelmaking and shipbuilding center, and the first Nova Scotian steamer was built here. It was incorporated in 1875. Population 10,022 (1986); 9,812 (1996).
