Corner Brook, city and port on the western coast of the province of Newfoundland, Canada, on the Bay of Islands, at the mouth of the Humber River, near the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Corner Brook is a center for manufacturing, fishing, and tourism. A large pulp and paper mill operates in the city. Other products include cement, gypsum, iron, and processed fish. The city includes Captain James Cook Monument, honoring the navigator who charted the region in about 1767, and the Memorial University of Newfoundland Regional College at Corner Brook. Gros Morne National Park is nearby. Corner Brook was incorporated as a city in 1956. Population 22,719 (1986); 21,893 (1996).
