Moncton, city in Westmorland County, southeastern New Brunswick, Canada, on the Petitcodiac River. Moncton is a transportation, distribution, commercial, and manufacturing center. Major products include textiles, processed food, and wood and metal items. Insurance companies are an important segment of the economy, and the telecommunications industry has grown in importance. Moncton is nicknamed the Hub of the Maritimes because all railroad lines in the Maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island pass through it. The city is served by Moncton Airport.
Moncton is the site of several educational institutions, including Atlantic Baptist University and the Université de Moncton, which has a museum of Acadian history and an art gallery. Moncton's principal tourist attractions include a twice-daily tidal bore, or wave, on the Petitcodiac river that is 3 to 60 cm (1 to 24 in) high. Another attraction is Magnetic Hill, where, through optical illusion, vehicles appear to roll uphill. Additional points of interest include the Free Meeting House, Moncton Museum, and Centennial Park.
