Campbellton, city in Restigouche County, northern New Brunswick, Canada. It is a port on the Restigouche River, near the head of Chaleur Bay (Baie des Chaleurs) at the border of New Brunswick and Québec. Campbellton is a shipping, fishing, and resort center. Chaleur Bay is a popular salmon-fishing location, and Campbellton hosts a salmon festival each summer. French and English are spoken equally in the city. The community, established in the late 18th century as Martin's Point, was laid out in 1833 and renamed, probably in honor of Sir Archibald Campbell, lieutenant governor of New Brunswick at the time. The city was rebuilt after a fire almost entirely destroyed it in 1910. Campbellton was incorporated in 1889. Population 9,073 (1986); 8,404 (1996).
