Prince Rupert's population has risen steadily since the early 1980s. The 1996 population was 16,714, up from 16,620 in 1991 and 15,755 in 1986. The city's inhabitants are mostly of British descent, but the city also includes non-English-speaking immigrants and indigenous peoples (about 25 percent).
