Prince Rupert, city in western British Columbia, Canada. Prince Rupert is home to one of the world's largest natural ice-free harbors and serves the large Northwest Coast region of British Columbia, particularly the area's fishing, forestry, and shipping activities. It is located on Kaien Island near the mouth of the Skeena River about 750 km (about 470 mi) by air northwest of Vancouver. It is flanked to the east by mountains of the Coast Ranges, and to the west and south by the adjacent offshore islands of Digby, Ridley, and Watson. Prince Rupert has a mild, damp climate, with an average daily temperature range of 4° C (39° F) to —1° C (30° F) in January and 17° C (63° F) to 9° C (48° F) in July.
