Chilliwack, incorporated district municipality in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is 100 km (60 mi) east of Vancouver and located on the south shore of the Fraser River. A farming, dairy, and logging center, it has food processing, trade, and service industries. Tourism is also very important to the economy. Significant features include Cultus Lake Provincial Park, a popular recreation destination for residents of the Greater Vancouver region, and a nearby Canadian Forces base at Vedder Crossing. Chilliwack is served by Chilliwack Municipal Airport, Abbotsford Airport, and Vancouver International Airport.
Present-day Chilliwack was originally occupied by the Sto:lo Nation. When gold was found in the Fraser River canyon area in 1857, most prospective gold miners traveled through Chilliwack on their way to gold fields. Recognizing Chilliwack's agricultural potential, some people stayed in the area. By the mid-1860s, people had set up farms and businesses, clustered around a steamboat landing that transported goods and passengers downriver. The township of Chilliwhack (then spelled differently) incorporated in 1873. In 1881 a subdivision called Centreville split from the township. It incorporated in 1908 as a separate municipality, the City of Chilliwack. The township and city remained separate until 1980, when they merged to form the district municipality of Chilliwack.
