Abbotsford, city in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, 65 km (40 mi) east of Vancouver. Abbotsford is located in the Fraser Valley with the Fraser River to the north and the United States to the south. Traditionally based on an agricultural economy, including the production of dairy goods, hops, and berries, the city is now the primary retail, trade, and service center of the central Fraser Valley. Industry is also important. Manufactures include food and feed products, as well as construction materials, such as brick.
Abbotsford is home to the University College of the Fraser Valley, the Western Pentecostal Bible College, and the Columbia Bible College, a Mennonite institution. A railway junction, Abbotsford is also linked to the Trans-Canada Highway, which skirts the south side of the city. The city is serviced by the Abbotsford Airport, the site of a major annual international air show each August.
