St. Albert, city in central Alberta, Canada, on the Sturgeon River. Located on the northwestern edge of the province's capital, Edmonton, the city is a commercial, service, and distribution center for the surrounding diversified agricultural area. The city's high-tech industries grew in importance at the end of the 20th century. Points of interest include the Musée Heritage Museum, the Mission Hill Historical Site, and St. Albert Place, designed by Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal and home of the Arden Theatre. Annual events include the Northern Alberta International Children's Festival and the Kinsmen Rainmaker Rodeo, both held in May.
St. Albert grew around a log chapel (now a museum) established in 1861 by Father Albert Lacombe. The settlement is named after Father Lacombe's patron saint. St. Albert is Alberta's oldest non-fortified community. It incorporated as a city in 1977 and experienced significant residential development at the end of the 20th century.
