Medicine Hat, city in southeastern Alberta, Canada, on the South Saskatchewan River. It is 300 km (200 mi) southeast of Calgary, Alberta's largest city. Medicine Hat is a commercial, manufacturing, and transportation center situated in an agricultural and natural-gas producing region. Major manufactures include processed food, clay and glass products, and chemicals. The presence of the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Suffield and the Defence Research Establishment Suffield (DRES) are important to the economy. Medicine Hat is located on the Trans-Canada Highway and is served by Medicine Hat Municipal Airport.
The city is home to Medicine Hat College. Points of interest include the Clay Products Interpretive Centre; Saamis Tepee, which is located on the site of a former buffalo camp; and the Medicine Hat Museum and Art Gallery, which contains information about the founding and development of the city along with descriptions of pioneer life. Among the city's many parks are Echo Dale Regional Park, which features a farm and petting zoo, and Police Point Park, a wildlife sanctuary along the river. Medicine Hat is home to the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League and the Medicine Hat Blue Jays, a farm baseball team of the Toronto Blue Jays. Annual events include the Spectrum Festival in June and the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede in July. Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park is southeast of the city.
