Madinat ash Sha'b, formerly Al Ittihad, town in southwestern Yemen, located north of Aden, on the Little Aden peninsula. The town was built in the 1960s in order to serve as administrative center for the British-sponsored Federation of South Arabia. It was given its current name after South Yemen became independent in 1967; together with Aden, it served as capital for several years.
