Among noteworthy places of interest are the old and new suqs, or markets; the new market is housed in a dramatic structure featuring traditional motifs. Ash Shariqah is home to a lively press, including the newspaper al-Khaleej (The Gulf), which publishes extensive news reports and outspoken political and social commentary. The city is also the leading center of theater and literary life in the UAE.
