Zeytinburnu, district of Istanbul, located in northwestern Turkey on the northeastern coast of the Sea of Marmara. Zeytinburnu has railroad and light rail connections to central Istanbul. The 5th-century Istanbul Land Walls, which separate Zeytinburnu from Istanbul, have been declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The land Zeytinburnu occupies is believed to have been a part of the town of Hebdomon in the Byzantine era. After Istanbul fell to the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, the region came under Ottoman rule. The Ottomans subsequently established tanneries in the area. In the mid-20th century Zeytinburnu was declared an industrial zone, which stimulated the establishment of new industries, such as cement manufacturing, and caused a population growth. Zeytinburnu then became a district of Istanbul. The district remained the center of Istanbul's leather industry until the tanneries, a major cause of pollution in the area, were removed in the early 1990s. Population (1990) 165,679.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Zeytinburnu district Information info
