Kadiköy (ancient Chalcedon), city in northwestern Turkey, on the Sea of Marmara, a residential suburb of Istanbul. It is the Asian rail terminus and is connected to the Galata Bridge steamer port by ferry. Few traces remain of more than 2500 years of history. Kadiköy was possibly a Phoenician site; the first known settlement was the colony of Chalcedon, established by Greeks from Megaris in 685 BC. Later Kadiköy was under Persian, Greek, Bithynian, Roman, and Byzantine rule; the Fourth General Ecumenical Council was held here in AD451. Ravaged in the 6th century, Kadiköy fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1350; it was first named Kaleca Dünya. Population (1990) 648,282.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Kadikoy Information info
