Fatih, residential district of Istanbul in northwestern Turkey, on the Golden Horn (an inlet of the Bosporus). Boat service is provided to the Galata Bridge. Fatih is within the old city walls and includes the Fenar (Phanar), Ayvansaray, and Edirnekapi sections and the Edirne and Ayvansaray gates of the city. It is the site of the Fatih Camii, or Mosque of Sultan Muhammad II (also called Fatih, or the Conqueror), built in 1471; the Mollazeyrek Mosque and some other mosques were originally Byzantine churches. The City Museum, the Valens Aqueduct of 378, and the Aspar Cistern of 459 are also located in this district of Istanbul. Population (1990) 462,464.
