Eyüp, residential district of Istanbul, in northwestern Turkey, on the Golden Horn (an inlet of the Bosporus). Eyüp is the terminus of a boat service from the Galata Bridge, which spans the Golden Horn. Situated in an area sacred to Muslims outside the original city walls, Eyüp is the site of the Grand Mosque, built in 1458, and the tombs of Eyüp (Ayub) or Hazreti Halit, a disciple of Muhammad, the founder of Islam, and of Sultan Muhammad V. Population (1990) 211,986.
