Eskisehir, also Eskishehir, city in western Turkey, capital of Eskisehir Province, on the Porsuk River (a tributary of the Sakarya). Ruins of the Phrygian and Roman city of Dorylaeum are located nearby. Eskisehir is an important industrial center; its products include cement, sugar, textiles, chemicals, meerschaum products, and farm and railroad equipment. The city is also noted for its hot sulfur springs. Anatolian University (1973) and an institute of economics are here. Crusaders defeated the Seljuk Turks in Eskisehir in 1097. The city came under Ottoman control in the late 13th century. Its development as a modern city dates from the introduction of the railroad in the 19th century.
