Balikesir, city in northwestern Turkey, the capital of Balikesir province. Balikesir is situated in a major agricultural region that produces olives, tomatoes, wheat, and cotton. Industrial products of Balikesir include textiles, leather, carpets, and embroidery. Roads and railroads connect the city to other parts of Turkey. Balikesir is at least 5000 years old. It was known as Hadrianutherae and also as Palaeokastron during the Roman and Byzantine empires. Historic buildings include the 14th-century Karesi Bey Mausoleum and several 14th- and 15th-century mosques, including the Zaganos Pasa Mosque, the Yildirim Mosque, and the Umur Bey Mosque.
