Craigavon, borough, Northern Ireland. The district council of Craigavon was created in 1973 when the historic county of Armagh was divided into two local government districts: Armagh and Craigavon. The southern portion of the county has joined Newry and Mourne in what was the county of Down.
The New Town of Craigavon, established in 1965, is situated between Lurgan and Portadown. Lurgan is an industrial town that originally owed its importance to the linen industry. With the decline in that industry it has since diversified into optical lenses and food processing. It is also a busy road junction. The poet and artist George W. Russell (known as Æ) was born there, and James Logan, one of the founders of Pennsylvania, came from there. Nearby, on the southern shores of Lough Neagh, is Oxford Island, with good bird-watching facilities. Great crested grebes, tufted ducks, terns, and—in winter—whooper and Berwick's swans can all be seen. Corncrakes hide in the long grass of neighbouring hay fields between April and September. Portadown was also a linen town and like Lurgan has since diversified its industrial base.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
