County Antrim, Newtownabbey district borough - - Pictures
Newtownabbey, district borough, Northern Ireland. The district council of Newtownabbey was created in October 1973, when the six historic counties of Northern Ireland—previously divided administratively into 73 separate councils—were replaced by 26 single-tier district boroughs. County Antrim was divided into eight local government districts: Antrim, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Belfast City, Carrickfergus, Larne, Moyle, and Newtownabbey.
Newtownabbey district lies on the shore of Belfast Lough and is rural to the north with dairy cattle, pigs, and sheep farmed. The administrative centre of Newtownabbey, on the Belfast border in the south, is a New Town and dormitory for Belfast workers, with light industry—chiefly electronics, telecommunications, and textiles. Other towns are Ballyclare and Doagh in the north of the borough.
