Waltham Forest, London Borough of, administrative region, London, England. In 1965 the boroughs of Chingford, Leyton, and Walthamstow were amalgamated to form the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The borough is located on the north-east edge of London, between Epping Forest in the east and the valley of the River Lee in the west. Although mainly a built-up residential area, it includes significant amounts of forestland, reservoirs, and open space.
The southern half of the borough—Leytonstone, Walthamstow, and Leyton—contains two thirds of the population and is characterized by many of the problems of inner city areas, while the northern district of Chingford is more prosperous. The borough contains the Lee Valley reservoirs, as well as Walthamstow Market—the longest daily street market in Europe. The surrounding London boroughs are Enfield, Haringey, Hackney, Newham, and Redbridge.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
