Hillingdon, London Borough of, administrative region, London, England. Hillingdon was formed by the amalgamation of the Borough of Uxbridge, the Hayes and Harlington Urban District, the Ruislip-Northwood Urban District and the Yiewsley and West Drayton Urban District. It is the third largest London borough and lies on the west of the capital, bordered by the counties of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Surrey.
The south part of the borough is relatively flat and industrial, but further north it becomes more open and wooded as the land rises towards the Chiltern Hills. The River Colne and the Grand Union Canal run down the western perimeter of the borough; both are now chiefly important as areas for leisure and nature pursuits. South of the M4 corridor, which crosses the lower portion of the borough, lies Heathrow, the world's leading international airport. Another aerodrome is found at Northolt.
