Ealing, London Borough of, administrative region, London, England. Ealing is situated to the west of central London, adjacent to the boroughs of Hillingdon, Hounslow, Harrow, Brent, and Hammersmith and Fulham. The Grand Union Canal crosses the borough in the north and forms part of its western border with Hillingdon, while the busy North Circular Road and the London to Oxford A40 cross paths at Hangar Lane Gyratory, one of London's busiest intersections. The borough includes Acton, which was a popular health resort at the beginning of the 18th century, and Southall, which expanded rapidly after World War II owing to overseas immigration from the recently independent countries of the “New Commonwealth”.
Ealing is multi-ethnic and socially diverse, ranging from the predominately Asian population of Southall's crowded streets in the west of the borough, to the sedate suburban villas of the Bedford Park Conservation Area in the east. Ealing town is the main centre. The borough contains some of Brunel's finest engineering constructions, including canal heritage sites and the largest railway depot in the country at Old Oak Common. Famous former residents include the novelist, playwright, journalist, and barrister, Henry Fielding, and the actor, theatrical manager, and playwright, David Garrick.
