Croydon, London Borough of, administrative region, London, England. Croydon was formed in 1965 by the amalgamation of the County Borough of Croydon and the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District, both in Surrey. In 1969 the Parish of Farleigh was transferred back to Surrey. Croydon is bordered by the other south London boroughs of Sutton, Merton, Lambeth, and Bromley. Much of the borough lies in the Green Belt and it has many wooded areas such as Purley Beeches and Selsdon Wood. The River Wandle, a tributary of the Thames, has its source here. The London to Brighton railway line increased Croydon's industrial and commercial significance in the 19th century, and opened it up as a residential area for commuters travelling into the capital. Croydon has many ecclesiastical connections, and 11 former Archbishops of Canterbury are buried in the borough. There is a significant out-of-town retail park at Purley Way, which serves much of south London.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
